The Importance of Corrosion Monitoring

April 15, 2010

Corrosion problems occur in a wide range of oil-water systems, in production, transportation, storage and use of hydrocarbons. The description here of a system as oil-water includes those that are intended to be dry but where the ingress of small amounts of water is difficult to prevent. In dry hydrocarbons corrosion is not a problem. (  hit on here to download the report – 141 pages)

In terms of the corrosion processes occurring oil production systems can be divided into “sweet” and “sour” systems. In the former corrosion is largely due to CO2 present whereas in the latter H2S, present in addition to CO2, is the prime corrosive agent. There is, however, no rigid definition of how much hydrogen sulphide is required to constitute a sour system. In general there is a tendency for reservoirs to sour with time, especially if water injection is used
